Welcome & Call to Worship

Psalm 146:5-10 (NIV)

Leader: Welcome to Evanston Bible Fellowship on this third Sunday in Advent and Christmas Spirit Sunday! If you’re new, we invite you to scan the QR code in front of you and fill out the connection card to let us know you’re here. Please stand for our call to worship from Psalm 146, reading the words in bold…

Leader: 5 Blessed are those whose help is the God of Jacob,
whose hope is in the Lord their God.
All: 6 He is the Maker of heaven and earth,
the sea, and everything in them—
he remains faithful forever.

Leader: 7 He upholds the cause of the oppressed
and gives food to the hungry.
The Lord sets prisoners free,
All: 8 the Lord gives sight to the blind,
the Lord lifts up those who are bowed down,
the Lord loves the righteous.

Leader: 9 The Lord watches over the foreigner
and sustains the fatherless and the widow,
but he frustrates the ways of the wicked.
10 The Lord reigns forever,
your God, O Zion, for all generations.
Praise the Lord
.

Leader: Let’s lift up our hearts and voices in worship!

Joyful Joyful We Adore Thee (Ode To Joy)

Verse 1
Joyful joyful we adore Thee
God of glory Lord of love
Hearts unfold like flow’rs before Thee
Opening to the sun above
Melt the clouds of sin and sadness
Drive the dark of doubt away
Giver of immortal gladness
Fill us with the light of day

Verse 2
All Thy works with joy surround Thee
Earth and heav’n reflect Thy rays
Stars and angels sing around Thee
Center of unbroken praise
Field and forest vale and mountain
Flowery meadow flashing sea
Chanting bird and flowing fountain
Call us to rejoice in Thee

Verse 3
Thou art giving and forgiving
Ever blessing ever blest
Wellspring of the joy of living
Ocean depth of happy rest
Thou our Father Christ our Brother
All who live in love are Thine
Teach us how to love each other
Lift us to the joy divine

Verse 4
Mortals join the mighty chorus
Which the morning stars began
Father love is reigning o'er us
Brother love binds man to man
Ever singing march we onward
Victors in the midst of strife
Joyful music lifts us sunward
In the triumph song of life

Manger Throne

Verse 1
You could have stepped into creation
With fire for all to see
Brought every tribe and nation to their knees
Arriving with the host of heaven
In royal robe and crown
The rulers of the earth all bowing down

Pre-Chorus 1
But You chose meekness over majesty
Wrapped Your power in humanity

Chorus
Glory be to You alone
King who reigns from a manger throne
My life my praise everything I own
To Jesus the King on a manger throne

Verse 2
You could have marched in all Your glory
Into the heart of Rome
Showed them splendor like they’d never known
But You wrote a better story
In humble Bethlehem
Creator in the arms of common men

Pre-Chorus 2
You will die for our redemption
And You’ll rise so we can live

Bridge
From heaven to the cradle
From cradle to the cross
Let heaven and nature sing
This is our King
But the grave couldn’t hold Him
Our God has overcome
Let heaven and nature sing
This is our King
(REPEAT)

All hail the King
All hail the King
All hail the King

Ending
My life my praise everything I own
To Jesus the King on a manger throne
To Jesus the King on a manger throne

Advent Week 3 Reading: Isaiah 35:1-10; Galatians 4:1-7 (NIV)

Reader: Briefly introduce yourself (and family).

Reader: Today is the third Sunday of Advent—a season when we eagerly anticipate the coming of Jesus Christ. Advent is a season of waiting that is designed to cultivate our awareness of God’s actions—past, present, and future. We celebrate Advent on the four Sundays leading up to Christmas by hearing Scripture, lighting candles, and remember the hope, peace, joy, and love that Jesus brings. The candle on the third Sunday is pink because it symbolizes joy—Jesus is almost here, and we can hardly contain our joy! (Pause) Hear these words spoken by the prophet in Isaiah 35:1-10.

1 The desert and the parched land will be glad;
the wilderness will rejoice and blossom.
Like the crocus, 2 it will burst into bloom;
it will rejoice greatly and shout for joy.
The glory of Lebanon will be given to it,
the splendor of Carmel and Sharon;
they will see the glory of the Lord,
the splendor of our God.
3 Strengthen the feeble hands,
steady the knees that give way;
4 say to those with fearful hearts,
“Be strong, do not fear;
your God will come,
he will come with vengeance;
with divine retribution
he will come to save you.”
5 Then will the eyes of the blind be opened
and the ears of the deaf unstopped.
6 Then will the lame leap like a deer,
and the mute tongue shout for joy.
Water will gush forth in the wilderness
and streams in the desert.
7 The burning sand will become a pool,
the thirsty ground bubbling springs.
In the haunts where jackals once lay,
grass and reeds and papyrus will grow.
8 And a highway will be there;
it will be called the Way of Holiness;
it will be for those who walk on that Way.
The unclean will not journey on it;
wicked fools will not go about on it.
9 No lion will be there,
nor any ravenous beast;
they will not be found there.
But only the redeemed will walk there,
10 and those the Lord has rescued will return.
They will enter Zion with singing;
everlasting joy will crown their heads.
Gladness and joy will overtake them,
and sorrow and sighing will flee away.

Reader: Hear also these words of joy from Galatians 4:1-7.

1 What I am saying is that as long as an heir is underage, he is no different from a slave, although he owns the whole estate. 2 The heir is subject to guardians and trustees until the time set by his father. 3 So also, when we were underage, we were in slavery under the elemental spiritual forces of the world. 4 But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship. 6 Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba, Father.” 7 So you are no longer a slave, but God’s child; and since you are his child, God has made you also an heir.

Reader: After the candle lighting, the response will be “prepare the way of the Lord!”
We light this candle in hope. (Light the first candle)
We light this candle in peace. (Light the second candle)
We light this candle in joy, the joy that we have in Jesus, our Savior. (Light the third candle)

Response (All): Prepare the way of the Lord!

Reader: Let’s pray…
Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
ever faithful to your promises
and ever close to your church:
the earth rejoices in hope of the Savior’s coming
and looks forward with longing
to his return at the end of time.
Prepare our hearts and remove the sadness
that hinders us from feeling the joy and hope
that his presence bestows,
for he is Lord forever and ever. Amen.

Reader: Please stand (as you are able) as we sing “O Holy Night.”

O Holy Night/Holy Forever

Verse 1
O holy night the stars are brightly shining
It is the night of the dear Savior's birth
Long lay the world in sin and error pining
Till He appeared and the soul felt its worth
A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn

Chorus 1
Fall on your knees
O hear the angel voices
O night divine
O night when Christ was born
O night O holy night
O night divine

Verse 2
Led by the light of faith serenely beaming
With glowing hearts by His cradle we stand
So led by light of a star sweetly gleaming
Here came the wise men from Orient land
The King of kings lay thus in lowly manger
In all our trials born to be our Friend

Chorus 2
He knows our need
To weakness is no stranger
Behold your King
Before Him lowly bend
Behold your King
Before Him lowly bend

Verse 3
Truly He taught us to love one another
His law is love and His gospel is peace
Chains shall He break for the slave is our brother
And in His name all oppression shall cease
Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we
Let all within us praise His holy name

Chorus 3
Christ is the Lord
O praise His name forever
His power and glory
Evermore proclaim
His power and glory
Evermore proclaim

The one who would be called Emmanuel
The promise was delivered

Your name stands above them all
All thrones and dominions
All powers and positions
Your name stands above them all

And the angels cry holy
All creation cries holy
You are lifted high holy
Holy forever

Verse 2
In the humble town of David
A Savior born today
The one who would be called Emmanuel
Behold the host of heaven
With holy roar proclaim
The one who would be called Emmanuel
The Messiah our God is with us now

Hear Your people sing holy
To the King of kings holy
You will always be holy
Holy forever

Benediction: 1 John 4:9-14 (NIV)

Leader: As we go, receive this benediction from 1 John 4:9-14:

9 This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. 10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. 11 Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12 No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us. 13 This is how we know that we live in him and he in us: He has given us of his Spirit. 14 And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world.

Leader: Go in peace to love and serve the Lord!
